Red Lentil Daal


  • 250g red lentils
  • oil
  • 5 garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2.5cm piece of ginger finely chopped or grated
  • 3 green chillies finely chopped
  • 1tsp ground coriander
  • 1tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1tsp black mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • pinch of asafoetida (optional)
  • 3 plum tomatoes de-seeded and diced
  • 3 tbsp chopped coriander
  • lime juice


  1. Pour 600 mls water into a saucepan over a medium heat. Add the well washed lentils and cook for 15 minutes stirring regularly at first as this is when it will stick. Add more water if required.
  2. Meanwhile heat some oil in a frying pan and add the garlic, onion, ginger and chillies, cook for 10 mins till the onion is soft.
  3. Add the spices and cook for a further 2 minutes.
  4. Fold this mixture into the lentils.
  5. Continue to cook the lentils for a further 5-10 minutes then fold in the tomatoes, coriander and lime juice.
